We're keen to get a trainer to come on our yacht for three or four days (maybe a week even) to give us (wife and me) some intensive practical sail training. Solent based. Can anybody recommend someone? (We don't want someone that shouts a lot and thinks we all want to do the Fastnet Race, coz we don't!)

Re: Your new yacht

It sounds as though you are looking for some tuition on yacht sailing rather than general coastal skippering? Maybe someone here would be willing to help.

What yacht design are you buying?

Re: Your new yacht

Hi everyone,
We are also loooking for own boat tuition and practical help on our 36ft steel Breeon. Seems to make much more sense to learn about your own boat rather than learn on a boat you don't know. We are all kitted out and ready to cruise. Have day skipper and my partner has yeasr of experience but we just need to bruch up on things and gain a qualification to let us visit other ports abroad. Based in Hull......... ANyone for a Rhumba on the Humber and the North Sea??

I recommend Hobo Yachting. It's a family-run business and Ken really knows what he is doing: he's been an instructor for over 20 years (ex air force navigator, I believe) and he taught me a lot. He also has a GSOH and the courses were fun, even if I did fall in the drink first day out!

Re: Your new yacht

Jonjo,

We've gone for a Nauticat. Love the pilot house and the amazing quality. I'm sure it' not a purists yacht but for us coming from motorboating it's a great "bridge" in the change of code.

Lot's to learn - what fun!

Hi Rob

We were recommended by people in our marina to use a guy called Chris Slade to do our own boat training which we did last September. He's based in the Southampton area, is an RYA examiner and co-wrote the current "RYA Navigation Exercises" book. Although I have no connection with him apart from our training last year, he was in my opinion an excellent trainer, pleasurable company and I can thoroughly recommend him.

PM me if you'd like contact details and I'll try and dig his phone number out.
