The planking on Flamingo is pitch pine screwed to oak frames with 2" #12 bronze screws. Where I am replacing frames I am also replacing the screws, and apart from recovering from the eye watering price of said screws, I am now worrying that some of the existing holes are damaged too deep and oversized, to the point where the screws will be in danger of pulling through. Is it acceptable or good practice to drill out the holes with an oversize hole bit and then epoxy in a grain plug that can then be drilled and counter bored to the correct size? Or should I rout out a larger patch as has been done previously on the hull? image.jpg

Jonnie Hi,hope you got my samples of pitch pine?

You have another option and that is to lay the new frame alongside the old one , so your fixing problem will go away.

I found Anglia Stainless the best source of silicone bronze screws.

If you want to discuss this further do PM me

Best

I used the wooden plug method around some fastenings, but I used an 1" plug and only to half depth.

Hi Mad Pad, yes, got the samples thanks. Your solution would be a good one had I not already removed the old frames :) Unfortunately it was necessary as the steel floors are bolted to them and the wood was beyond redemption.
