our dehler has tbs type none slip panels which have following years of exposure to sunlight changed colour - thinking of overpainting this winter - anyone done it before and if so did it need a primer or does international /blakes none slip deck paint adhere to clean (ie scrubbed with freshwater) faded tbs?

thanks

I did this on my Dehler 35 two years ago. Firstly, I scrubbed the deck using washing up liquid, rinsed with fesh & let dry. I used Blakes Deck Paint, thinned about 20%, using the recommended thinner (No 1?) I applied two coats on a sunny (an perhaps rather too breezy) day.

Two criticisms:

1. The resulting coats were quite thin, and even with two coats wore through in places after 2 seasons. Because any subsequent coats will tend to settle into the 'crevices' of the TBS covering, thereby tending to smooth the surface, I am considering redoing it, after first really roughening the surface with a hand-held wire brush.

2. Blakes appear to have since changed both the solvent type and colours of their Deck Paint so touch-up is no longer an option. So I am considering using another, tougher prodcut. Perhaps an epoxy based product (Treadmaster?) may prove to be better.

No idea of what is TBS.

I removed all the non-slip mat plates (a hard work) on my Delher Optima 101 (made 1985) in Aprirl 2006 (as they started peeling off bit by bit).

To save weight on board, I just painted 2 coats of International Interdeck (satin) paint on the sanded deck gelcoat cleaned with actone (no primer).

The finishing & non-slip effect are excellent (unfortunately once a crew member hurt by the sandy material when sliding his arm while getting up from the rail in a tack).

2 years from then, only small scratches on the paint by the bulleys & spin pole. I add another coat of interdeck on top of the old paint this month (just wash & clean with actone before re-paint) and the boat just look fresh.

I overpainted my ETAP 32 ( same TBS)some years ago with International Interdeck and had really good results who did last.
Easy to apply , did two coats without any primer .
Great product , I used it again last year on an another boat with the same benefit

How Did It Go ??

It's a year later, and I'm in the same situation with a 2001 Dehler 36 and TBS that is worn. How did your resurfacing of the TBS work on your boat? If you liked how it worked out, please provide details of the material and process you used.

We replaced the TBS panels once already on our boat, as we race, and it gets quite a bit of wear. I don't look forward to replacing it, and we would not go with TBS again, but would switch to Treadmaster. Better yet, find a way to keep the TBS alive by recoating.

Thanks for learning all about the process, and sharing it!

Re: overpainting dehler tbs type deck none slip-anyone done it?

Hello
My dehler 37cr '98 has a tbs type deck non slip that lost its grey non slip surface, and became yellow with Little black points.
The dealer suggest to change it because no other Solution seems possible ... 3000€
I soul like to paint it over, but would be glad to hear other owners' opinions and experiences ...
Any help?
Bye from Venice
Thank You!

update - we painted our decks with international none slip - went on well -looks good and is still there

Hi Gents,

I know this article is a few years old but I along with many other yacht owners have TBS decking. Its a very good no slip surface, come in a variety of colours and is easy to apply but everyone has a problem removing it.
I have the solution to that. Yes its a little tedious but I have 11 panels on my Optima 101, removed 1.5 panels on Saturday last, and in three hours last night I was up to 8, a task I will finish this evening,
I was using chisels, scrapers, toluene to soften the glue but it was painfully slow.

So I came up with a brain wave -

I got some of those PIG® Oil-Only Mat and placed them on the TBS decking.
I then soaked the sheets in toluene and allowed the TBS soak for say 15 to 30min to soften the adhesive.
Then i got one of those multi tools, (a Fein 110v Fein FMT250QSL Starlock Plus in my case) a knife blade fitted and on I went.
If the decking is badly worn both layers will come together. If the decking is good as Port and Stb stern areas you will have to pull the top layer off first or you can bring it all together all be it a little slower.
that is because the TBS top layer is nearly impervious to the Toluene but it does get through.
One the top later is off I re lay the pads and the base layer and glue is soft in a matter of minutes.
I can remove a typical panel in 30min. then I lay the soaked pads again and use a 6" blade scraper to remove the excess glue and a rag to clean up.

Use a chemical mask and Nitrile gloves as they wont disintegrate with the solvent.

If you started early on a Saturday morning two people would fully strip a typical deck on the day.
