Having recently moved my boat to Southampton, I cant seem to find any decent bays to stay safely overnight.
I previesly keep my boat in Poole and there was so many safe places to stay overnight for free.
Does anybody know of any?

it's that free word............
I don't think technically that even Chichester Harbour is a free anchorage to non resident boats so that just leaves the 'open solent'.
Depending on wind and tides you have the various bays around the Needles, theres room for a couple of boats tucked into the edge of the channel heading into Hurst, Osbourne Bay for anything Southerly wind wise and obviously shelter in the bays right round to the East.
Suspect that's why theres so much rush for Yarmouth, Lymington and Newton Creek, let alone Beaulia River.

Osborne Bay if the wind from the south, wave to the Queen!
Sandown Bay if from the west, bit noisy from those scooter thingies.
Round the back of Hurst Point if from the north.

But anchor far enough off the beach.......

For a cheapy, Newtown creek takes some beating. It's about £2 for an overnight, more if you use one of their bouys.

oh yes weve been to Newtown 3 times, and 3 times weve woken up in a diferent place!! one of these times had another boat tied up along side( AFICA) and we woke up in the woods. We had drifted 2 boats together weaving our way through masses of other boats in the night, to find us in a nice wood, good thing was we didnt have to walk far to have our b/q . the other half wasnt happy though!.

What about KEYHAVEN ??

THANKS FOR YOUR SUGESTIONS

oh before anybodys says it it i know it does help to put out enough chain on this occasion i blame everybody else.

You can overnight just outside Keyhaven for free (just off the club starting box - 'North' of the pontoon - don't anchor south of this, because the ebb tide can run quite fast & you'll drag into the main channel & Hurst overfalls) or in the pool just inside the river (summer NFDC warden comes after 0830am). Local fishing boats leave via the river entrance early am (at speed), so don't block their departure. There may be buoys available also. Keyhaven yacht Club welcomes visiting yachtsmen - showers + bar, but doesn't open very early (about 1130am). It can be a long row up to quay if your punching tide.
If you overnight in Osbourne, you will be awakened at about 2 - 3 am by a violent wash (particularly at low water), as a container ship passes in the main channel. Boats have been laid right over on their beam ends. Also this happens some time after the offending ship has dissappeared (so be careful if you get up on deck at night for one of those constitutionals over the stern!)

Re: Thorness Bay

If it is East to South
v much quieter than Osborne, get close in to the cliff area and it's sheltered enough

Alternatively if it's SW anchor outside of Newtown to the west of the channel towards (I forget) Head.

Both free.
