Went out this weekend and noticed that the engine temp was up justa tad.

On saturday we dried the boat to change the anode on the leg, boy did i mess up we didn't re-float until 11:30 pm.

When we started the lump I noticed that the temp just kept climbing into the red, so I shut it down and removed the thermostat and limped home cold.

We had the same problem last september and a thermostat change did the trick, I have changed it again today and all seems well.

The engine is a 5.0 Gi with SXDP drive 1998 vintage.

Has anyone else had the same problem? any ideas?

One more problem and the good ship Ballena gets it!!!

The troubleshooting section in my mercruiser manual says, 'Check for clogged water lines and restricted inlets/outlets. Check for broken or stuck thermostat. Look for worn or damaged water pump or water pump drive. Replace thermostat'.

I guess you have tried all of this so not much help there. It may have simply been a dodgy thermostat and all could be all right now.

Have you tested it?

Cover with boiling water and you should see it open and then close when cooling down. If it doesn't open then definately due a refund although probably some clause that excludes non-factory fitting to Volvo engines!

Hi,

Don't want to be the profit of doom but when we had overheating on our 151A engine all the Volvo engineers steered me towards the manifold. When I rewmoved it the whole inside was rotted away. Replacing it brought down the temperature but at a cost of around £500 for the mainfold. The only other area is the header tank blocked. ONe further word of warning is that the manifold when it rots (as they all seem to do) starts eroding the cylinder head ports for sea water can then get to them.

Hope I am wrong but it is worth checking at least. The job by the way on the cleopatra was not too bad to do but a liittle more room round the engine would have been helpful.

Check your risers. After about 5 years the water channels can become blocked. If you leave it, you will have no cooling of the exhaust gases either and you will burn the rubber gaters that joint the risers to the exhaust horns.
