Do you have to remove them? If OK and still turning OK then just clean them and re-assemble. Is the central shaft fixed to the baseplate with screws? Do Harken have an assembly diagram online? When I did my Anderson winches which had been salvaged from a sunk yacht and full of sand, I just dissassembled as much as possible and washed well in diesel and then reassembled.

Winch servicing

Thanks for the utube link. However, the video is not continuous! At 1m56s the central shaft suddenly appears in the operator's hands, and later it appears that the cogs which were in the centre at the bottom are no longer there. Also, replacing the central shaft is not shown.
I will try to remove the shaft although it is not essential as the cogs can be cleaned as shown in the clip.

Thanks again,

Michael.

This pdf shows parts, the inner shaft comes out from below after removing screw 6428 it would seem. I have Lewmar winches so know nothing about Harken. http://www.harken.com/pdf/4562.2-99.pdf Other winch manuals here if that is not yours http://www.harken.com/pdf/WinchManuals.php

The Harkens I've done have had to be removed from the deck to service properly, unlike Lewmars. Lousy design. :(
I agree - I have had some winches like that (can't remember the make that I had) in the past. I never took them off the deck, so some things never got cleaned and services properly. Lousy design indeed!

We have Lewmars, but they look very similar: Slide the central shaft out of the top, then the sprockets just slide out of the side opening you can see them threough; a bit fiddly to relaign and reassemble, but not too difficult. Don't ignore them though: cleaning them in place won't get at the smaller/inner cog and when I recently stripped ours - first time in years/since new? they were just about the dirtiest/most grease/salt congealed bits in the whole winch.

Servicing Harken Winches

Thanks for the link to the Harken website service section - I should have looked there, had I known it existed.
Indeed my winch is there - 40.2 st. however, I note that the central shaft appears to be secured from the bottom with screw 6428. The video shows the bottom cogs being cleaned and greased in situ, although later the central shaft is shown out of the winch - I think this is only to show the viewer what it looks like.

Thanks again,

Michael.

I think it depends on the model, all mine come apart from above. The 56 also has the nice feature of spilling 70 or so ball bearings if you are not careful.

When you put them back, remember to oil (not grease) the pawls.

As Nigel says.... its a no cost option...:(

To prevent this, I cut the bottom out of a cardboard box to the exact diameter of the base of the winch, then disassembled the winch inside the box. No bearings spilled:D
