Overcoating Fertan

Could anyone offer any hints and tips on overcoating Fertan on a yacht keel. Which primers have you used, have you also epoxied and how long did the end result last before having to strip and recoat?

The keel was blasted and "Fertaned" yesterday.

I used Int Primacon after having my keel slurry blasted, and Fertaned but I couldnt find any good advice on the subject. I tried to locate the manufacturers on the web but failed. I will be watching this space with interest.

I suspect that if I had the keel dry blasted, I would have used an epoxy based coating but I think probably you are talking the same process I used whereby Its not posible to get the keel dry enough quickly enough to stop the rust starting ( hence the use of Fertan).

I rather think that when I haul the boat in the autumn the keel will have rust scabs again........Nick

Nick, thanks for the reply. Like you I am keen to avoid further rusting and am hoping to hear from someone who's followed this process and can advise from years of experience on what works. The guys who put the fertan on recommended International or Blakes primer and in the absence of other advice I will do just this.

Have you ever tried blasting then putting "osfor" rust treatment on? It will dry a sort of grey colour, then you can put any primer on, even epoxy, we use it on the rigs out here, brilliant stuff.

I haven't but in another Forum thread I notice Fortan is also used on the rigs so perhaps it's similar chemical with a different brand name.

As you know clean by either blasting or grinding ,then fertan
which when it dry's turns purple .
Wash off let it dry then paint ,we used normal red oxide but as for epoxy mmmmm,
I think cold tar epoxy mastic would be fine but check with PDS in Peterborough
They are very good re paint systems they have an add under coatings.
I would think that if you sandblast to clean metal then a coat or two of cold tar epoxy resin would be about as good as you could get .
Jotum paint is very good stuff
Cheers

Could well be, I think osfor has a lot of phophoric acid in it, but I'm not sure, if you find any be careful with the stuff, it has some strong shit in it!

Its odd there seems to be so little experience. Our method is to leave the Fertan on for a few days to work, sometimes several coats, then wirebrush it all off as far as possible - it doesn't stick very hard on a sound steel surface anyway - then epoxy prime. Mostly this is a permanent cure, I think if the rust was light enough that Fertan has converted it all. Sometimes the rusting starts up again later. On heavy rusting nothing lasts long: the only way is to blast or grind it out.

Rust converters are exactly that, they need a certain ammount of rust to work. If you have bare clean steel then the best thing to do is go on directly with your steel primer.
Epoxy coal tar is the best of the two pack coatings, but needs a freindly environment for best resilts and will last longer. A good zinc phosphate primer is the best single pack coating, and is more tolerant to adverse conditions during application, but you cannot expect it to last as long as the two pack. Generally speaking the success of the job is more in the preparation than the coting used.

I'm sorry, I only get it from the rig, a couple of litres last me for years. I'm sure its available from somewhere, I'll have a look out here tonight and see if I can see a supplier/manufacturer on the drum!

I tracked down the distributor for Fertan in the South - Keith Chauncy, Poole (01202) 730 709. You may want to call him to check what else he sells. Have now applied a second coat of Fertan, looks as though its doing the job and weather permiting it will soon be coated with two part epoxy - a few others have tried this and it seems to work.

PS www.fertan.nl takes you to the manufacturers website; however, unless you speak dutch it aint much good.

I have heard others (including Lynette within this forum) have had success with epoxy on top of Fertan so that's what I'm going to do. Unfortunately I suspect the rust will inevitiably come back, I simply hope its not for a few years.

Hi Linette.

I have just applied my second coating (after slurry blasting) and it appears to be doing the job. Have bought a two part epoxy (West System) and will be applying it soon, weather permitting.

Thanks for your help, it gave me the courage to continue.
