Work may take me to Paris for 6 months or so (it's tough at the top, they say), and I'm considering sailing the boat across and finding a marina, in order to reduce living costs. Boat is 36ft by 13 by 5'6". Any suggestions as to a cheerful, safe, and convenient marina or moorings please ?

Also any other considerations apart from telling my insurance company ?

(I have checked out the Post de Plaisance at Paris Arsenal) who are averse to a long term stay.)

References to Paris Hilton will be eaten by my firewall, unfortunately...

I kept my boat In the Paris Arsenal marina for 8 months three years ago. When I turned up in late August requesting a berth for the winter I was told it wasn't possible but...I stayed until the following May without being put under any pressure to leave.

It seems to be like that in many French marinas - much head shaking but it doesn't seem to mean anything. I had exactly the same experience where I am now on the Saone and I have spent two years there.

It may be worth another crack at The Arsenal if that's where you'd really like to stay.

Yes, a fantastic place for wintering. Much of Paris is walkable from there. Plenty of restaurants and traiteurs nearby if you don't fancy cooking onboard or want something a bit more exotic.

Transport excellent too - both Metro and buses.

Summer pricing was by the week when we were there - in our case (10m) about £100 but it dropped to £40 over the winter, which I reckon was pretty good value.

We drove over and left the car in the underground car park for a month. I thought the price might be horrendous, thinking of what I'd pay in London but it was less than £100.

I haven't got reference books to hand to check but I suspect that the depth on the Seine will be more than the 1.8m found on the canals.

So, providing you enter at Le Havre, you won't be restricted to 1.8m.

We had our boat at the arsenal sept-april on route to the med via canals. Fantastic place to be based. The port de plaisances was very helpful. May be its worth visiting them, we did.

The Arsenal is a truly great place to stay. Agreed.
But is there anywhere else (a proper over-winter marinery type place, not just an alongside wall such as near the Eiffel Tower) in Paree or the suburbs, within reach of a metro or rail station?

One word of caution regarding the Arsenal marina. The security is pretty poor and there is public access to the docks. They had a security guard with a Rottweiler at night but absolutely nothing during the day. We had thieves come on board in broad daylight and rip off some stuff. Paris is a big city and suffers the same crime probs as any other big city. Take sensible precautions and you should be all right.
Other than that I fully endorse the place. We stayed in there for about 10 days on the way to the Med and had a ball.

Enjoy!

I can only think of Stephane Mallarme Marina at Samois near Fontainebleau - about 40 miles from Paris, on the Seine. It was secure and had all facilities and I personally wouldn't mind commuting to Paris by car from there and I'm sure there is a rail link too.

Not as close as the Arsenal, obviously, and without the cachet though Samois does host the Django Rheinhardt festival in July. Considerable cheaper than the Arsenal too (ignoring any commuting costs).
