I had a similar overheating problem with my 4 cylinder Mercedes (OM 636) which eventually turned out to be an air lock in the engine (fresh) water pump. On mine there is a small pipe which leads from the water pump body to the cylinder block which is designed to stop air locks forming in the water pump. This had become blocked. All I had to do was to uncouple the flexible hose and clear the pipe that leads to the block. The pipe is very small diameter (about 1/4 inch) and very short so can take some finding. I stripped down the cooling system twice before I discovered it.
Hope this helps,
Henry
