After years of annual touching up I've decided my keels need more drastic treatment

Keels 20 1 (1) (800x600).jpg

I'm going to take them back to bright metal with a Tercoo rotary blaster and coat them with an epoxy primer such as Jotomastic. Following this...
(1) would it be necessary to apply a bonding coat of xylene-based primer such as Primocon or could the xylene-based antifouling go straight onto the epoxy?
(2) would it be advantageous to apply the above soon after the epoxy to achieve a chemical bond and if so how soon?

Your thoughts appreciated.

Advice given when I Gelshielded my hull was to apply a coat of hard scrubbable antifouling to the final epoxy coat while it was still tacky. Any A/F paint can then be applied on top. I did this nearly 20 years ago and there has never been any flaking. On a cast iron keel you will never achieve a fully water resistant coat, water will get underneath in the end, but the five coats of West on mine last generally 10 years or so.

Since your suggesting using jotun I would suggest ringing them and discuss your needs. Sml paints and coatings. They are very helpfull and knowlegable. Epoxy systems from them are great value for money.
