Does anybody know anything about the home-build cat in the photograph (Bitterne, near Southampton)? It has been there for 30+ years to my knowledge.....

I really cant tell you any more than to agree that it has been there at least thirty years, it was there when I was whisked off to piano lessons just around the corner as a kid.

Due to the width it would be a hell of a job to get it in the water, although I suppose a wide load and a big crane of Cobden Bridge at HW!

Good God, thats just the sort of project that would appeal to me most!!!!

Yes, it's been there ages. I was told that originally it was to be flown out by Chinook but in the time it took to construct the boat, Eastleigh Airport declined to give permission. I have no idea if this is true or not.

We built our cat (40 ft x 23 ft) in our front garden in Bucks, 70 miles from the water. There was endless local speculation on how it was to be moved, which we encouraged by circulating tales of helicopters or even permanent nautical-themed garden shed. In fact we had left selected seams unfixed and lifted it out in 4 sections for re-assembly at the coast.

OTOH there are plenty of self-builders whose projects go on for years. We have a friend who started his build in 1976, taking over our plot when we launched our first boat. He still hasn't launched and, being in his late 80s, probably won't now. Others toil on for year after year in pursuit of perfection like the one who took 3 weeks and around 40 man hours to build a gas locker. To give him his due he did launch after 25 years and at last count was somewhere in southern Portugal.
