Ouzo Recommendations

Ch 16 isnt for that, its primarily an emergency channel, albeit often shared as a call up channel. indiscriminate use will make it quickly fall into misuse and denigrate its usefulness as a safety tool.

You mean like the Solent in the summer with all the radio checks? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

hen you consider your vhf may well have a range of 30 miles if your aerial is on the top of your mast,

Unless you change to a lower power setting

I know what ch 16's for, I don't need preached at, but it's another tool to use if neccessary

Come on guys - how many big ships are there in the Solent that are a threat to yachts...??? Possibly some x channel ferries but then its up to us to be out of the buoyed channel. Quite easy - and if they are maneuvering around Bramble Bank etc they are on yacht watch, constrained by their draft and in the shipping channel. if a yacht gets in the way then the yacht skipper is daft...

The point I was making about calling on VHF 16, which is also the frequency for establishing communication and linking it to a good strobe light was for once you have left crowded day sailing waters like the Solent.... Of course it is possible for there to be confusion as to which ship you are talking to but with a stated either yous or their GPS position, course, relative bearing to or from, it really does reduce the area of doubt..

If you add the briefly used strobe then the area of doubt is very small... Of course there will sometimes be confusion but possibly, possibly if Ouzo had used a strobe, come up on ch16 VHF early on it 'might' not have ended the way it did...

So does anyone actually use Channel 13 for this? It's the IMO designated channel for "intership navigational safety communications" isn't it?

I haven't, but I've never called a ship on Ch 16 either.

I've never use 16 to call a ship to agree evasive action.

But on the Humber I have used the VTS channel (12)

It seemed sensible somewhere like that where everyone is to a greater or lesser extent limited in where one can sail.

Ship to ship on VTS channel seemed to be quite normal and mostly it was between pilots who clearly knew each other. I found they were always ready with advice to "a little fellow" like me.

Don't know if they have VTS on the Solent.

Mmmm me thinks in and on the Humber 'bridge to bridge' within the river is on 10 , 'bridge to VTS is on 12, and outside the river 'bridge to bridge' is on 13 and and bridge to VTS is on 14 or there abouts
