Hi,

I need to replace the outer stern bearing on my Achilles 9M as there is a lot of free play. The bearing housing was removed by cutting off a thin bronze retaining strip and then simply unscrewing from the stern tube.

From it I extracted a rubber bush from it which shows no evidence of being a cutlass bearing. The bush OD 1 1/4", ID 3/4" and the length just over 2".

Looking at the housing itself there are are water inlets for a cutlass at the rear and there may still be a bronze sleeve in the housing but I am not sure and don't want to damage it finding out.

I have attached a couple of photos and would be gratefull if anyone recognises it or could offer some advice

Thanks

Andy

Looks like a very early cutless bearing clean up the bore and measure diameter and the length from the internal face to its end then do a google for a supplier, cant remember the name tis a firm in Glasgow that stocked both imperial and metric sizes. Good Luck. pampas

There are a huge variety of bearing carriers, just make suer you measure very accurately the carrier and also your shaft, checking for wear at different diameters, and then talk to a bearing supplier.

Some are off the shelf items others can be machined to fit either clearance or interference. I can't emphasise enough, accurate measurements are critical in getting a good set up that will last.

Hi,

Thanks for all the advice so far, it appear the best fit cutlass bearing (OD 1 1/4" ID 3/4") is 3" long, just under an inch too long for the carrier. If I were to shorten a bearing would it cause any problems?

Here is a side view (not very good, the camera struggles to auto focus on this) overall it is about 3" long. There is a lug either side and on one, a piece of bar was brazed to it to prevent the housing from unscrewing itself.

T Norris Marine Engineers have a good range of cutless bearings and sternglands, just google them. Very helpful when you talk to them.
No links just a happy customer.
