Returning late last night an interesting "Thud" came from the rear of the the boat and one of the outdrives jammed in gear.Inspection this morning reveals that, irrespective of where the little gear shift mechanism is moved,no drive exists to the prop.My guess is either a shaft has broken or maybe the gear shift load pin has snapped.Any opinions .
Looks like a boat out the water job at the very least. Grrr................

Can be a number of things, probably the universal joint has broken up if there was a loud noise, could be the shear tube between the top gearbox and the leg casing itself, or the cone clutch but you usually only loose drive one way, start by taking the top gearbox off rather than the whole leg if your feeling lazy in this rain, you may have got something round the prop and thats sheared the drive splined tube, thats what its there for.

Sorry to hear of your dramas OG - and apologies for this to all outdrive users BUT - I would never have outdrives. Had them once on a Fairline many years ago.

Never again. Can't see whats wrong with the low-tech approach of a hole in the stern and a shaft through it. I know that outdrives are more efficient, but they do seem to cost an arm and a leg in servicing from what my pals tell me.

(Sits back and waits to be blasted!)

Not a blast, just a gentle return.

Without revisiting the well-rehearsed outdrive/shaftdrive argument, I have had both and I would select according to the application. The cost implications depend on the mileage covered and the price of fuel. Properly maintained outdrives are OK and have advantages and disadvantages.

However, an often ignored advantage of outdrives which has become significant to me is the ability to raise the prop close to the surface to clear rope fouling, etc.

Cheers for all advice everyone .Will remove G/box before complete leg.Removed gear change mech for quick look inside just now but all seems OK.Fairly certain (ha ha )not U/J as only did gaitors and checked about 2 weeks ago, also no clonkety clonk in gear ewhen engine turning over or prop turned by hand.Simply no connction between engine and prop and merely propshaft bit stiff to turn by hand.
Could well have thumped something while leaving pier but as everything was of course pitch black could not see much of anything at all.
Boat now coming out again on Weds......Sigh.............
Barkingboy. Pink floyd tribute band was ace but the £60 we saved by not actually going into the concert will not go far to fixing the busted outdrive we suspect.. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

They do have their good points and being able to de-rope enroute is a big plus as we have frequently found out.
The main prob with mine is that they are a bit old and tired and would probably much prefer to up in the big Volvo Penta workshop up in the sky for that final coat of anti-foul and allowed to dissolve quietly into a large pile of aluminium dust.
