I have just bought a boat with DP290E outdrives which I want to service myself. The workshop manual mentions special tools for removing props and pivot pins.
Can anyone tell me if you need these tools or are there alternatives.
I believe the tool to remove the pins is a slide hammer and the pins have an internal thread to take the end of the hammer. If that's the case, what size are the threads.
Any experience gratfully recieved.

Have just finished servicing my 290 DP-D1s.
Duo props came off using socket set, long screwdriver of correct dia. and large adjustable wrench.
My pins were not threaded and were drifted inwards with the steering on full lock (to avoid bellows). You could make up your own slide hammer or extractor with a long threaded bolt fitted over a sleeve which is larger than the pins, and just pull them through.
Make sure you have a large block of wood under the drive, at the correct height, to take the (heavy) weight when the pins come out. Either leave the wood in the same position, or make a note of where you put it, because it makes life a lot easier to replace the drive if it is at the correct height.
Managed job on own, although a helping hand to replace drives would have been useful.
When replacing pins, make sure holes are aligned as near as poss. otherwise the plastic bushes will break.

Good luck.

David, it took a good 8hrs.
It was my first time, and on my own (sob, sob), but I also replaced the water intake hose, which was a bit of a s*d. Said hose has to be replaced from engine side and involves a certain amount of gymnastics, etc.
Also, one drive wouldn't go back too easily, and both exhaust bellows were to say the least, "challenging". Leave tilt ram pins out to the very last 'cos you need to lift the drive up thru' various angles to engage exh. bellows. Leave props off with plastic bags taped round drive shafts to make life easier. It also makes it easier to refill drives with oil.
Would do it again, and could do it much quicker next time, especially without changing water hose.
Do not try to do both drives on your own in 1 day though. It was quite tiring.

David and Teddy

Thanks, for that.
Teddy, you say pins aren't threaded but David you mention you made slide hammer tool. Does that mean your pins are threaded?
