I had one of these on an Enfield drive years ago, took it off one year and it made no difference, in fact the boat steered better without it !
IMHO you just have to learn to drive by using the thrust and once you have mastered it a rudder is redundant.

Interesting coment on "wandering". An outdrive rudder won't stop low speed wander, in fact it will probably exacerbate it. The answer is to fit a small fixed plate rudder on the hull ahead of the outdrive. This will transform slow speed handling (almost miraculoisly). Keep it as small as possible to avoid alteration of high speed handling. For displacement boats make it as big as you like.
