Apologies if you have already had this question.

Will a V/P 290 DP outdrive handle diesel power if I re-engine? (Currently V6 petrol)

If so what would be the max HP or best type of engine? (Eg. Perkins etc.)

I believe the ratio is currently 2.30 DPA whatever that means.

Don't know if this helps, but I have V/P 290 DP Drives on my twin V/P KAD 44 diesel (260 h.p.) engines. Presumably the legs are the same as yours!

No reason why it shouldn't, although you would need to re-ratio it or struggle to find suitable props.

The simplest engine to use would be a chevy V8, same bolt patterns for bell housing as a V6. Don't fall into the trap of buying a Samurai, it seems you don't always get a good un!

Would the Chevy be a straight swap then?

Or is there a Chevy V6 that I can marinise using the parts I already have?

There's V8 chevy oil burner that will fit onto your leg. Give Samurai motors a call. Heard some horror stories about the lumps, but other people have fitted them and have nothing but praise.

The Chevy V8 diesel is similar to the petrol v6, the mounts are further forward in the boat and slightly lower. You could use the alternator, some bracketry and a few other bits from the petrol engine, and wouldn't have too much work to do.

You could buy an engine from Samurai, but I have heard of some real horror stories. Take a look at www.marinediesel.nu they do a range of engines from 170hp upwards.

Whoa there fella
Petrol and diesel o/drives have different ratios. In my 290SP petrol leg , ratio was 2.15:1, Diesel ratio is 1.6:1.

This means that with the lower revving diesel your prop will need extra pitch to make up for the lower revs and extra torque.

You either need to change the ratio (i was quoted £1200 for parts only!!!) or special props. You then get to the edges of the efficient operating parameters for propellors, but It can work.

I had to get the biggest pitch that V**vo make and then add pitch and 'cupping'. The result is wonderful but puts more torque thru the gears so be careful with acceleration. Also maske tickover a bit quick.

Generally not quite a simple swap.
