Can anyone point me in the right direction regarding a little problem that I seem to have inherited over the last couple of weeks??
I have Volvo 290 Duoprops of which the starboard one was given a a real good overhaul (by Volvo) during the winter. However I have noticed just recently that when I push the throttle forward (starboard engine) there is a 2-3 second delay before the gears engage......can be a little unnerving when trying to come alongside etc. Selecting astern is no problem....instant reaction. Any ideas guys??

Thanks Simon. Do these "290s" rely on some kind of oil pressure then to operate correctly??. I had all new seals fitted on that particular leg in January so I would be a little bit miffed if they have failed again. Is it a lift out job to check the oil level??
On a different note Simon.......was "Bacchus" at Swanwick last weekend??

The suffer problems if they have too much oil rather than too little if my info is correct.

As for Swanick, nope Bacchus was tucked up on here mooring all weekend due to the fact that we were fitting a new head gasket to the port engine, we only took her out for a quick blast to check all was ok on Sunday afternoon. Should be out to play this weekend though!

Thanks Simon. I have arranged to have the boat lifted next week so that oil level can be checked (to be on the safe side) but Volvo engineer had a look today and thinks it more likely to be cable related. Throttle heads are getting a little worn too .....something that I have been aware of since I bought her 2 years ago so this will probably make me change the throttles.

Enjoy Bacchus at the weekend!!

Hi, how old are the drives ? might be cone clutch if they are older ones, as said yes too much oil can cause problems but if a Volvo dealer did the service then that shouldn't be a problem.

Worth checking any slack in cables etc.

Just ideas, I might be miles out.

Peter

It must be catching! My 290 DP-D1 (stbd. side) has started doing the same. Smooth / slow engagement forward, but still thumps astern. It used to "thump" nicely once, but now 650 hrs later is showing signs of too much use entering locks on the R.Thames.
Has anybody else come across the problem of replacing the clutch cone and / or gear shift shoe? Once the problem starts, how long does it take before losing forward gear completely?
Outdrives have been regularly serviced and oil level never more than half on dip-stick.

My first outdrive was a 270 and that used to kick up, but that was due to worn retaining pawls, there are three main parts that wear, spring, one on each side plus a centre one, the pawl latches themselves and the bar they hook on to.

I replaced the springs and the latches then cheated a bit an tuned the bar around to use the other side, problem solved /forums/images/icons/smile.gif.

Also had to clear out the reverse latch mechanism as it didn't seem to sit quite right, loads of silt had build up in the gear shift cover.

Now have nice new shinny dp- e drive.

Cone clutch & selector shoe £500 from volvo dealer. Parts are £300 so you can save youself £200 if you are confident enough to pull the upper section of the drive to bits!

Thanks for the info Sunfury. Do you know if this is a reasonable diy job, or is it best left to a Volvo dealer? I presume that as the poor engagement is only in forward drive the wear will be readily apparent, or perhaps not.

Surely someone out there has had a similar problem with their DP's.

Any help in right direction will be appreciated.

It may just be the gear selector, it sits between the two top gears and conects to the plate that the cables attach to.

Seleco do a great workshop hand book, got mine from Amazon for about 15 quid. Sold it with my old 270 leg.

I suspect that this is a simple job, but I didn't have the confidence to do it so I gave it to Mr Volvo and opened my wallet! Now "clunk" and "thump" in all directions!!

I'm sure some of the "old hands" on this forum must have done this job before - try a post on PBO.
