At some point this year I am lifting my boat for a hull clean and antifoul.Whilst I am doing that I wish to repaint or touch up my alpha 1 gen 2 which has the odd paint chip / corrosion. Any thoughts on the matter ie what paint etc.

i use hammerite special metal primer then smoothrite. Not a perfect finish when slapped on with a brush but seems to work. Some form of etch primer is essential whatever paint you use.

Ian,

Mercruiser give extensive details on the way they think it should be done - and materials.

A lot depends on the extent to which you want to get involved.

Personally I take the drive home every 3 years and do the job througherly in the shed taking it back to bare aluminum where necessary, etch primer, rubbing down, priming painting etc etc then antifouling

In between I dab a bit of paint and lots of coats of antifoul.........

on the other hand I would love to fins any solution to keeping the stainless props clean - currently it's a battle between me and weed growth throughout the season; whilst it's nice to feel you earn the odd beer I am starting to get fed up with it!

Totally agree with Duncan, followed the Merc instructions and used their products from new and our O/D was still clean & tidy, showing no signs of corrosion when we sold her after 11 years, even used the Merc antifoul. Any Merc dealer will supply all the stuff you need in small handy tins.

Thanks for that. What "stuff" are we referring to, is it in spray form or brush on. Also are the "Alpha 1" transfers available as the last tim I had the leg serviced the engineer must have caught it with a screwdriver or something and ripped half of it off.
