Does anyone have an outboard instead of an inboard? I thought Banjo did. What experiences have you had with this set up in the Bristol Channel? Are there places you can buy an outboard "over the counter" in the area?

The issue I am having is that no work seems to be being done on installing the Vetus engine I have purchased in Portishead. The situation can't carry on like this and I need to formulate a plan B. The other plan would be to find someone who could fit the engine in the next two weeks, but I can't see that happening round here (unless someone knows of a company that is reliable and does stick to their promises).

I've posted a similar thing on the PBO forum, but I'm interested in the local aspect (though the goal I've always had to support local businesses is rapidly receding from the top of my priority list).

Whats wrong with F4 or that other place in the centre of Bristol? OR why not just bung the inboard in, its only a days job.

The engine's a bit non-standard for my boat which will require replacing the engine beds and getting two new feet made for the engine. If it was a totally standard job, I'd have a go myself. It would have been better to have gone for a Yanmar 1GM10 in retrospect as that would have been a lot more standard for my boat, but at the time I was promised that the Vetus would fit, but then I've heard lots of promises...

I didn't know Force 4 sold outboards. What's the "other place" in Bristol? I thought there was only one chandlery in Bristol.

Sorry to hear of your problems Zlod. Banjo does have an outboard, its an 8hp Honda .You could get by with a 5 or 6 just for getting through locks and into marina etc.

You definitely want a long shaft and may need to cut some hardwood wedges to mount the bracket on due to the angle of a Contessa 26 transom.

The rake of the outboard is adjustable by putting the pin in the correct hole in the quadrant on the outboard clamp ,you can see in the pic. I think your transom rakes more than mine and I am allready in the last hole hence the reason I think you may need wooden wedges between the bracket and the transom. There is also a bit of adjustment by the quadrant on the bracket which may be enough for you.

Good Luck, I hope it all comes together for you I know how frustrating broken promises of that nature can be.

The other place is behind the Yacht Club. I would get a few mates who are into engines to help you fit inbd. much better and not a big job.

Things are going better with the inboard now and I think that the engineer who is doing the job is now on the case, so fingers crossed. I've seen the engine in the boat now (which is a good sign) and I've been promised that it will fit.

I do hope that things work out locally as I would rather spend my money in the local area and support local business.

Seriously though, good luck with the engine fitting /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The Contessa 26 is a good sea going boat but IMO an outboard isnt a good sea going engine set up. There are times when the wind is blowing directly from your destination and the sea is up and you need to be able to motor directly into it. That will never be as effective with an outboard as with an inboard. Plus there is the issue of fuel and refuelling at sea.

If you think this is just me being fussy - when I bought my first boat from the Solent I tried to get delivery crews (I was new then) to bring it round Lands End to Cardiff. None would do som because it had an O/B.
Best thing I ever did on that boat was to junk the Honda o/b and install a new Yanmar.

You will devalue the Contessa with an O/B.

Try some of the Cardiff boatyards
