Outboards Suzuki

We have had a Suzuki 4 stroke 4hp for about a year now (2 years old when we bought it). We are very pleased with it. pushes our 22 footer at 5 knots .It would be a bit heavy for a small dinghy though.

I am told that the only difference between the 4 and the 5 or 6 hp is the revs .There is an L shaped piece of stainless steel that acts as a throttle restrictor I havent tried it but have been told you can order a replacement part for £15 turning your 4 into a 6 .

Its allways started easilly and ticks over nicely but if the carb is dry it takes several pulls on the starter cord to initially get the fuel in.It uses about 1.5 litres/hour flat out.We have the charging coil fitted which tops up our battery ok.

It didnt use any engine oil last year despite quite a lot of use, theres a window you can check the oil level through as well as the dip stick..

Suzuki outboards are not well built. Imy last boat club there were many with outboard motors and the consensus was that Suzuki are unreliable and have a bad corrosion problem. I got severe blistering on the leg after two years. Also, the water channels are very small and unless the outboard is flushed in fresh water for a recommended four minutes after every immersion, salt will choke the channels and stop the water peeing out, giving a costly repair. This should be done with all outboards after every trip, but my outboard mechanic says Suzukis are very prone to this. As an impartial professional, he reckons Evinrude to be the best built with the least problems.
