Many thanks for your views on small outboards,
quite obviously the jury is still very much out!
However.... a decision had to be made,
and in the end I decided to go Old Skool.

Tohatsu
3.5 h.p.
short shaft
2 stroke
£349

To quote current P.B.O. article comparing the 2 stroke
Tohatsu to four small 4 strokes

Fastest on test
Lightest on test
Quietest on test
Highest bollard pull on test
Cheapest on test......

Hard to fault really, and as I have latent Luddite tendencies
the 2 stroke won the day.

Sounds very sensible based on the PBO article and others experiences. I will always be a 2T fan - small 4T's are not quieter and easier to live with - it's a myth! Maybe one day it will be possible to produce a small 2T with direct injection which will pass the emission laws. Not all new 2T's are banned from 2007 - only those that are carb fed.

Good for you ....

2 Strokes will always work with me ... till they get a 4 Stroke to be lighter, less price etc.

If my present engines fail - I shall look around the second-hand market for 2T's till supply dries up.

I've been thinking about one of these Tohatsu 3.5 motors as well, would you mind telling us where you found them for £349? Had a quick look on the net, best I found was £370.

Re: I agree.

Extreme Marine supply Tohatsus for £349 + £10 Carr. They advertise on Ebay so if you put their name in and search you should find them. If you can't find them let me know I have their number at home and have justed ordered the same outboard from them.

Cheers Keiron

Tohatsu shop.

It has a site on e-bay
3.5 short shaft (new model) £349
the site has a phone No. 07967 023610
so I rang up and spoke to a very helpful guy
who knocked a further £5 off as no ebay fees.

Also as I rang before 2 p.m., next day delivery possible.
Very reasonable delivery charge of £15 if you cant pick
it up yourself, and as they are on South Coast and I'm in
The Highlands was happy to pay.
Waiting for white van to pull up as I type

Hope this helps

I used them too, ordered 3pm Weds, in my office in London by 12 noon Thursday.

On the tender at about noon on Sunday happy wifey who no longer has to lug 5hp motor and fuel tank up and down the transom into the dinghy. 8 year olds can start it and seems to be pokey enough for an Avon 2.8 with floor, does not plane but who really cares??
