Guys

Where can I get my baby Honda 2hp outboard serviced? (Based in Shotley)

Think it needs more than just an oil change!

Time to get the book and the spanners out.
I had to strip the power head of my Tohatsu 3.5 right down and clean it all out after I mixed way to much oil into it's fuel.
Gaskets were easy to get on the internet.
Easy job really.
It worked a lot better after :)

Is it the air cooled one? If so then what's there to service? New spark plug, change oil, change leg oil. £10 in parts or pay Seapower in Woolverstone (nice people) £65

The carburettor galleries are very fine and block with dried fuel varnish. Other than that, just an oil change.

you have to be kidding!! do you think Susanna would allow me to take an engine apart?? world's clumsiest person here. Have lost count of the money I've spent getting someone to fix my cock ups!!

Have settled on a simple philosophy - other people need work too. I go out and earn a living - then pay some of that money to someone who knows what he's talking about. And doing. I genuinely envy people who can do complex work on their own boats. I've learned the hard way not to.

True - my pub landlord started designing cars in the saloon bar whilst I was in trying to have a quiet pint. I promised not to sell beer, if he promised not to design cars. An equitable arrangement that has stood the test of time.

I don't service my outboard or boat engine - I have a bloke do it, because I rack up credits during the year with him, and it keeps him in beer and biscuits.

Am an adept of a similar philosophy.
The one thing I am most short of (even more than money) is time.
I will do the most basic jobs technical on the boat (like engine oil & filter change, replacing a berth lamp, ...) but everything else: I get someone else to do.
At least I know it will be done properly and what free time I do have, I can spend sailing. Last thing I need is a 'project' to take up my time. There are already too few hours in my days.

PS: Simon, last month I took my Mariner 2.5 (not been used since 2008) for a service and overhaul to Seamark-Nunn. £87 and change.

I am another mechanically inept individual - if I am shown how to do something I can (sometimes) do it the next time but as for sorting from scratch I don't have a clue where to start.

With this in mind Fox's engineers will be looking at Alchemist's engine to discover why on my first trip out the engine overheated. Raw water was fine, must be something to do with the other bit that heats the washing up water.

thanks all - glad also to know I'm not the only one who isn't a diy god. Being berthed 20ft from Neil I suffer from a constant sense of inadequacy in the boat-repairing skills department.

Of course, I do get to take the boat outside the lock sometimes ;-)
