Hey guys

So I have my tohatsu 3.5 2 stroke clamped to my chair in my kitchen and it's been there for a week or two, I woke up this morning to find about 1cm of dark black oil on the kitchen floor, can anybody tell me what this is I can't seen to find where it's leaked from? Thanks

Kris

Oil from O/B

The oil is most likely from the gearbox. There is a seal at the prop shaft and of course seals at the drain and fill holes. You need to examine the motor to see where it is escaping from.
Check the level of the gearbox oil.
However there is just the chance that the oil (or whatever) is coming from the exhaust tube as a combination of soot 2 stroke oil and possibly water. good luck olewill

It is quite normal for a two stroke to "leak" black partly burnt oil from the exhaust outlet.

Look to see where it has come from, if from the exhaust no worries.. It will smell burnt too, of exhaust fumes, possibly even of petrol as well .

Oil from the gear box should not be black! it should be straw coloured and have the characteristic rotting cabbage smell of an EP oil.

If it is gear oil you need to be replacing some seals !

If it is gear oil and is black you have some serious maintenance to do.

When you change your gear oil each year note its condition. It should be "clear and bright". If it is milky it indicates water ingress through a defective seal

If I put my outboard on a chair in the kitchen for a week or two, as well as dark black oil on the kitchen floor there would also be a pool of something red, sticky, coagulates and we only have 8 pints of it.
