Hi folks,

just a quick one - I hope.

My old Honda BF9.9a outboard is missing its tilt adjustment rod. It's basically a 10mm round bar.

I plan to make one with a bit of stainless threaded rod and a couple of nuts, but I have an alarm bell going off about aluminium next to steel in salt water .

I THINK stainless steel will be OK inside the aluminium transom bracket castings, but I'm not 100% sure of my chemistry.

Can anyone advise before I take the plunge?

Thanks

Jeff

Personally I would prefer to use a smooth rod rather than a threaded one because there is less surface area exposed. If you are really worried about the interaction you have the option of giving the rod a thick coating of paint. Alternatively you could slip the exposed part of the rod (between the nuts) into a short length of plastic tube.

The tilt pin on my Evinrude was painted steel.

I have replaced it with stainless steel... no problems

But Puff the MD's advice is good . Use plain round bar threaded only on the ends for the nuts.

A few years ago my son dropped the tilt rod from our Yamaha Malta, I couldnt get a replacement immediatly. He wanted to use the dinghy so had a mooch around the bins at the marina, found an oven shelf. A hacksaw and a pair of molegrips and a new tilt rod was born.

I saw the engine on eBay earlier this year, its 10 years since this happened and its still going strong. So no, I wouldnt worry about it.

Let me have a look in the shed first, I have a load of spares for that engine...

If it's the same as the one in the pic, PM me your address and I'll stick it in the post.
