Does anyone here have an answer to John Vigor's question
[URL="johnvigor.blogspot.co.uk[/URL] about restarting an outboard when the kill switch has gone overboard?

You should always have a spare killcord easily available and attached to the boat or another person on board just for this eventuality - if you undertake any powerboat training it is one of the first things you are told.

Many (larger) outboards are designed to be immediately restarted after a kill cord stop, for safety reasons, such as recovering the poor soul who is overboard, our Yam 200 was like this. It wouldn't 'first start' without the cord.

It's worth checking and being very familiar with the way your engine functions. No point in wasting time if you don't need to.

Of course, always carry a spare in a very convenient location, close to the switch.

Tony.

I ran our Mariner 3.3 for a couple of months using a bit of 4mm line in place of the kill cord, after being sold the wrong one.

Have to say I'm a bit disappointed that such an eminent sailing guru couldn't figure out for himself that you can jam any suitable object in the gap and get going again.
