I have a problem with an outboard and am hoping some of you more knowledgeable boaters may be able to offer a suggestion of the probable cause.

The engine, a 70HP Yamaha (early nineties late eighties), was removed from the boat to be serviced. I was told everyting was fine. The engine in now back on the boat and connected up but the starter motor does not turn when the key is engaged. The battery is brand new and I have checked the kill switch etc and cleaned & vaselined all connections. The trim & tilt works fine. AS the engine was not attached to the boat and its normal electric set up I am not sure how they got it going. Any ideas? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I would start by that you have the kill cord attached and the engine is in neutral. Obvious I know but I have done it! Next try checking the connections at the starter and the starter solenoid.
Let me know how you get on.

All the best.

Hi Colin,
Thanks for the reply. I did check the kill cord and all the connections. I even took apart the control unit and checked mthe kill switch with a voltmeter. The only things I havent checked are the ignition switch and solenoid becuase I don't know how.

There maybe a little switch you need to flick on the remotes usually just under the remote handle when it is in full reverse . If its not flicked to start .......

looking on the parts catalgue on-line the starter solenoid has a part labelled as "wire pull" (item 39) which suggests that there is a manual way to operate the solenoid. It seems to be buried at the bottom of the casing. If that works then either the solenoid is duff or the switch wire to operate the coils is faulty or disconnected.
Just a thought
