Hi there

Is it possible to buy the parts to convery an outboard from short shaft to long shaft? I've found a site in the states that provides the kit for yamaha outboards. I'm wanting to convert a 4hp ss into a 4hp longshaft

Any help gratefully recived

it may be possible, but does it make sense? how much can you sell your current engine for?

I agree. E Bay the current one, and pick up another one for about the same money.

For a Johnson and presumably similar for Yamaha you need: Actual leg extension piece, new drive shaft, new gear shift rod, and new water pump tube The Yam might be easier but the removal of the power head to permit change of the gear shift rod and water pump tube on a Johnson is a dreadful job and that is assuming all bolts can be removed easily. I would strongly suggest if it is an old motor that you confirm you can dismantle the engine as necessary before committing to the new kit. That way if you can't get bolts out due to corrosion you can give up the prioject easily reassemble and sell the motor or put up with SS. Be carefull stainless steel bolts in aluminium can easily be snapped off in which case you are in big trouble. good luck will

Yes it is possible, but it is more expensive than changing engines. And a whole lot more hassle!

You might just get lucky, but the law of supply and demand means that the individual components needed for conversion usually cost a lot more to buy than as a complete assembly.

You also get your money back for the discarded components if you sell them still attached to a good engine.....
