Last year PBO did a great article on how to service your outboard. I have had to do a tidy up and now believe that I have thrown it away. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Does anybody know a good internet reference on how to carryout a service and impeller replacement ? It is a 4HP Evinrude outboard.

General service items as per the owners handbook.

Change gearcase oil. Refill from the bottom until it overflows from the top. Use new sealing washers on the drain and level plugs. Any water in the oil or milkiness means that there is a leaking seal somewhere that must be replaced.

Grease all grease nipples and other moving parts including clamp screws tiller handle and tilt mechanism, cover catch, throttle linkages, choke linkage, carburettor linkage.

Clean and reset plugs or replace (plug gap now probably revised to 30 thou if originally 40) Tell me the full model particulars (inc year and /or model number) and I'll check the current plug type recommendation.

If its is an old model you might want to check points and condition of coils but that will require a harmonic puller to remove the flywheel.

Clean fuel filter.

Impeller replacement is a matter of dropping off the lower unit to access the pump. It may be necessary to disconnect the shift rod but details depend upon the year which you have not given. Prob. best to get a water pump kit that will include all the parts you'll need.

ID the year from http://www.skoterskroten.com/img/arsmodellstabell.pdf

If you are going to do much work get a manufacturers manual. Third party manuals are too general. Magazine articles are good for mopping up split oil!

Dunno why it's called a harmonic puller but it is one that bolts onto the flywheel with high tensile bolts (There are tapped holes for the bolts in the flywheel) American threads on Johnnyrudes!

A puller that has legs that hook over the rim of the flywheel would most likely damage it or worse.

This sort of thing if the link works

PS Hope I did not leave out too much from my servicing instructions. No time to spare at the moment.

Home again next weekend!

On my Evinrude, 3.3 the impeller is changed by taking the prop off and unscrewing two bolts, it lurks in front of the prop inside the casing, maybe the 4hp is different?
just a thought, ill go now /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

[/ QUOTE ] No you are right some of the small ones with no clutch have the pump behind the prop. Much more accessible. AFAIK the 4 hp all have the pump on top of the gearcase (it will certainly be there if there are FNR gears or even F & N) but without knowing the year (or model number) I cannot check.

The link to the parts diagrams will show where it is.

Evinrude have been making 4 hp engines since before the wheel was invented so there are a lot of variations to consider!
