I've got an OMC (Evinrude) 4HP 2 stroke outboard and thought I'd treat it to a professional service this winter.

Anyone got any good (or bad) experiences of firms round the Solent area and could give a recommendation, please?

Good service and reasonably priced. My firms outboards are
serviced by them and always done on time, plus my own.

There's a growing caucus, of which I am one, that says - just check the oil and brush up the spark plug, make sure the petrol is fresh and properly oiled. Run it as often as possible and keep on doing just that.

What does a service achieve? £100 a year over 4 years goes a long way to buying a brand new engine. Having done the servicing, make myself feel responsible and good thing, I'm now in the other camp.

seconded. waste of money.

dont forget to change the impellor and the points occassionally

even more important make sure you use a decent grease on the bolts and especially on the drive shaft to engine connection.

And change the gearbox oil.

Renew the seals when there are signs of more than a trace of water in the oil.

Worth squirting a bit of 2 stroke oil in the plug holes before finally storing away for the winter. Even better use fogging oil in via the air intake to stall it. That gets all the engine bearings as well as the rings nicely oiled.

Well. I thought you were just being fogging offensive, but I looked it up on Google and there really is such a thing.

There is little

to servicing a tw0-stroke outboard.

Run it in fresh water, with some fogging oil through the carburettor intake when you lay-up.

At the beginning of the season drain the petroil, change the spark plug and the lower leg lubricant and grease it.

In total about 40' work - though you do need some specialist gear.
