Obviously it's not advised to do this but it depends on how long he opened it up for.
The object of "running in" is to wear the rings and bearings down to mate and match the other surfaces. A short burst of throttle should not be of any harm, in fact can help things along, but prolonged misuse can damage things somewhat.

Almost certainly not. Modern engines are so well made that they need a short run to wear off any tiny defects; thereafter - have fun.

You don't say how old he is. Well worth docking pocket money towards the next engine if you can get away with it.

<hr width=100% size=1>my opinion is complete rubbish, probably.

Depends on how long he "overrevved" it but odds are you will not notice any damage in the short term. Modern engines are built to tighter tolerances and need less running in however to get the best life out of the engine it still need breaking in gradually. You will probably do more damage by suddenly opening the throttle from tick over to full throttle as one sees so many folk do.

Be happy the engine will probably die from being dropped overboard or being layed up for the winter without fogging or being run without enough 2t oil or ..... rather than what has happened.

To prevent similiar happening the term "keel hauling" comes to mind but then that is not allowed anymore, or is it? /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
