My O/B is well mounted on 23ftyacht. It cannot be raised and therefore in the water when sailing as it is too much effort to lift it into the locker or I'm just lazy. About 4/5 knots the prop starts to rotate and sets up a vibration.
Question? Should I let it spin? Unnecessary wear on bearings etc., or put it in gear to stop it spinning? Locked in gear makes no noticable difference on the log.
Thoughts/addvice please.

Without being too knowledgable on these things I would have said put it in gear but I suppose you might put strain on the engine internals when sailing.

Also I know that rope and propellors don't mix but how about dropping a loop over the prop to stop it rotating. With the other end secured to the motor head as a reminder to remove it before starting.

Don't let it spin, lock it in gear. This actually reduces the drag from the prop and reduces the wear on the G/box. Boats with fixed props all lock them.......
Alternatively, fit another o/board bracket that allows you to lift it clear of the water. You're in N /Ireland so go to Down Marine (Comber road, Dundonald) where you'll get great advice from Kirk. no connection or vested interest with myself but I've had great service and support from him.
