I got a text from someone I know yesterday.

Seems he had been going out for a sail with wife and kids, but the outboard started, then stopped, and refused to restart.

I know the engine pretty well and it is super reliable.
He said he thought he had overfilled it with fuel (?), it's a internal fuel tank.

I texted back with a suggestion. But they had left the boat and given up. I wonder why he didn't just phone me before they gave up?

Any guesses on the problem?

I currently have same problem. The outboard cuts out as soon as I put it into gear and accelerate. Having replacedthe fuel filter and old connector my thoughts are that the petrol is too old (some bought in January) and it has gummed up the carb.
Today I am going to bring home the petrol container, empty/dilute into my car and buy a few litres of new. If this doesn't work I will have to try carburettor cleaner or take off the carburettor and bring it home to clean out the jets.
I don't fancy taking the carb off on the mooring due to the risk of something dropping into the water, although I will position a bag below if it comes to that.

He'd not switched the fuel tap on.

If he'd just called me instead of texting after the event he'd have been on his way. I had a look yesterday and turned on the tap. Off it went. Running beautifully.

Try running it without the fuel cap on. It might be a blocked vent valve. That symptom of cutting out when you put it in gear is exactly what mine does if I leave the vent closed.

Thanks Creaky I will clean it out (the vent and cap) anyway as I have just brought tank and carb home to work on.

I used to do this every time i went out on my bike, as im used to cars. it always stops about 400 meters from my house, outside the same shops :o:o
