Outboard motors... \"Badge Engineering\".

Hi ...perhaps one of you engineer types can help ...does anyone know if the small Mariner and Tohatsu outboards are one and the same ..they seem very akin to each other! Secondly how do they upgrade the 2.5 to a 3.5 hp using the same block and c.c. ? Not my strong point this technical stuff so simple replies appreciated, and will accept gentle leg pulling ! Cheers, Mike. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I bought a Tohatsu 4 some time ago and yes they are the same as the others apart from covers and badges and of course price. dont know much about the h.p either, as for pulling your leg, it will never start like that!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Is it not something like one's the prop output and one's the crankshaft output (is that the right word???)

Our Tohatsu 3.5 is great anyway

Re: Outboard motors... \"Badge Engineering\".

I belive the differance between the 4hp and 5hp is that on the 5hp the throttel opens all the way, i.e. the 4hp has a stop at 3/4 of fully open. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif The 2.5 and 3.5 could be the same.

Well thanks a lot you guys ...especially for not even gently tugging my leg for lack of technical knowledge. With your assistance and some equally good advice from YM contributors I have settled on buying a Tohatsu 3.5 ....£350 seems a good price from a dealer on Merseyside. Cheers and have a good Summer. Mike.
