Outboard Info Required

My old outboard gets heavier every time I use it. I need a small/light and powerful enough motor to drive an Avon Redstart (9ft) rubber dinghy. I would appreciate any advice/experience from anyone using such a motor. Details of history,age and any problems would be most useful.

with an avon softie 2hp is quite adequate. the tohatsu/mariner/mercury is a bit of a lump but can be carried. don't know of anything lighter these days.

incidentally the 3.3 version is the same engine with different tuning but is far too powerful for a soft-stern dinghy.

Agree with that but I wouldn't call it a "bit of a lump" I found the 2.5 quite convenient to swing over the rail into our Avon Rover. Simple little motor. Just clogs it's water by-pass quite often but it's easily cleared with a bit of wire.

i was comparing it to the seagul forty minus which you could almost tuck in your back pocket (or was it that i wasn't as feeble in those days!)

I think the lightest was either the Yamaha or Suzuki 2HP - not sure which one, not as powerful as the Mariner, but came out well in a ST test - ladies liked it as it was dead easy to start and the lightest at 10kg - all the others weighed 12kg+. You'll have to check wether it was the Yamaha or Suzuki.

My 2 hp Honda gave me good service for 15 years or so, and I replaced it by an electric Yamaha M12 (Minn Kota being the real name) to power my Avon Redstart.
The engine itself is very light (6 kg. I think) but the battery makes the difference.

Using my Avon just to go from boat to shore and back, I only need a small, light battery.

Very pleased with the new combination.
No more string to pull at, just turn the "gas" handle, and enjoy the silence!

Thanks to all who responded. Currently thinking of taking the plunge and getting Mariner 2.5 but could get interested in the small suzuki as I believe this is the lightest of the lot currently on the market. Anyone out there with experience of these, in particular any potential problems I should be aware of. Thanks in anticipation.
