having had a problem with my factory fitted overheat alarm on Tohatsu main outboard (turned out to be a broken push on terminal) along the way to sorting the problem I fitted a cheap digital fridge temperature gauge with a settable alarm. Works a treat for about £8, the only problem is that I am not sure that I can just cut and extend the wire to mount the gauge at the helm. Thermocouple I think, will try it as I supose I can always reconnect the wires if the calibration is affected.
Belt and braces now - I would hate to get a blockage/impellor failure and wreck a (relatively new) engine on only 340 hours.
