Off the top of my head I would investigate the centifugal clutch.
Basically a pair of tiny brake shoes flung outwards against a drum.
Have they seized ?

A different 2.3 problem...

Sometime last summer my 2.3 started making a sort of scraping, dry sound when in gear and I suspected the clutch. I stopped using it but have only now had chance to take the thing apart. The prop was seized by now.

What a bloody faff it is to get to the clutch! You have to work your way through most of the outboard...

Anyway the clutch pads and centrifugal spring are fine, the problem is the clutch drum - that is connected to the drive shaft - has seized, I think the bearing is probably the culprit. I need now to try and get hold of a new drum and housing (I can't separate the two). Any ideas where might sell them?

I think I may just take a trip to the outboard shop and let them fix it! :(
