outboard help please

hi I have a problem I started my outboard 2 weeks ago on the muffs first time this year it started good let the fuel run out and I left it tilted up but duck taped all ports/holes went to start it today and it gave a cough and the starter was slow as if it had hydroliced has any one got any ideas what is wrong , also does any one know where I could get a paper workshop manual for my out board which is a 70hp Yamaha [70 bet] 1980 ish . could it be the timing has jumped if so how do I check the timing. also is getting fuel into carbs.

Sounds like bad earth,flat battery or seized starter.

Put 'Yamaha outboard manual' into ebay and you get dozens of hits, many are cheap (but useful) .pdf copies but there are also paper manuals too.

ok will look on e-bay thanks for that, single I have cleaned earths, battery full charged when I first tried to start it.

Do you now have it cranking properly. That's the first requirement.

yes I went to boat today is cranking ok fuel pumping out pump, up to carbs ok got a spark at all three cyl checked kill switch no spark when cord not in spark when it is in cleaned all connections but will not fire up.

Are the plugs clean? Quite often when the plugs are on the way out the engine won't start.
Can you check the compressions?

hi the plugs are new, will try a compression test.
