hi I use a mercury 4hp outbaord on my yacht and when it is down in the water trying to change gear means having to hang over the stern of the boat which can be kind of worrying at times Am looking for some ideas for an extension to the gear lever Thanks

I have a piece of Aliminium about 4mm thick bolted to the gear shift lever to extend it about 60mm. This is not much but may just be an easy thing to attach with 2 bolts to tthe lever. On a Johnson 6Hp
I also have a piece of rubber hose just the right size to press over the throttle/ steering tiller. Again about 60 mm extension. good luck olewill

If it's the two stroke 4hp, this old thread might be helpful (I believe the Mariner and Mercury are the same engine):

The answer in that case appeared to be yes but at a hefty price. I have Morse type controls on my Yamaha F8 and they are a godsend when manoeuvring.
As William says it's a cheap and very effective fix to extend the lever. I did it on a Yamaha 4HP for nothing. All the bits were in my garage.

To make it even easier you could pivot a horizontal bar on the top of the lever and lead it to the pushpit stanchion or similar to operate from inside the cockpit, but that's overdoing it.

In my diving days we used to put a piece of blue plastic water pipe about 500mm long onto the stubby lever. You can then literally whack the lever and the inertia will do the rest.

Bloody hell, thought it was a Seagull ready for its proper use when I saw the chain attached! :)

My Johnson 4HP is in a well (Drascombe Dabber).
This is what I did for bringing the gear control on top.

[Sorry I can't insert the picture.]

You can find it in PBO May 2010.
