Last week in B&Q I came across an additive for petrol mower fuel which claims to be suitable for 2 & 4 stroke engines and which claims to stops the fuel going off and residue in the carbs. It is badged by Mountfield. Anyone know what this is and would it be OK in my 2 stroke Yamaha outboard?

I use a similar product which I think says Evinrude on the bottle. You put a couple of drops in every pint. It stops the unleaded fuel from forming a glue like compound which it does if it stands too long. It will also dissolve the glue like stuff as it flows through the carburetta etc. I use it in my Seagul outboard which I use for my dinghy and it only gets filled up with petrol a the begining of each season.
I would not use it in a lawn mower as presumeably it is used very often and the fuel does not have time to solidify. At the end of the season you should run/empty the fuel out.
Prior to unleaded I do not think the petrol formed this glue like substance.

Glue like substance?....it certainly did occur before full unleaded: I forget how many sets of (m/cycle) carb's I had to clean after owners left fuel in them for months/years. ...clogging jets etc etc (expensive to replace pilot/main jets on 4 carb's.)

I've rarely seen a problem if the carb(s) are emptied (run until it stops) & the tank vent closed (not possible on a bike, but always on outboards).

Some (cheap?) 2-stroke oils seem to aggravate the problem on pre-mix motors.
