Outboard for RIB

A recent post briefly discussed the size of outboard that can be put on a RIB, which left me with the impression that ignoring the manufacturers reccomendation wasn't a bad thing (something about it only being included for the American market).

I recently bought a Valiant Dynamic 270 RIB - it is 2.7 metres long, has a beam of 1.4 metres and has a GRP hull. I got an electirc outboard (easy for the kids to troll about in) but want a petrol outboard for me to play with!

The bumph that came with the boat indicates that a 5 kw or 6,7 hp outboard is the maximum that shold be fitted. Will this get the boat on the plane with more than just me in it? Ideally I would like to be able to blat about with 3 or 4 onboard (2 adults 2 kids). Anyone got any ideas? Is 6 hp ok for this or should I go bigger - if I do will it be too heavy?

I aslo see that they do a console with a seat/wheel that can fitted as an extra - is my RIB big enough for this??

Get a Yamaha 9.9, I don't see why an Avon R280 RIB can take 10hp, but the Valiant 2.7 can't.

What is the Valiant like, we are trying to find a secondhand one.
AND IF JFM HAD NOT SOLD HIS WE WOULD HAVE HAD IT/forums/images/icons/mad.gif

We like it - seems to be good quality. Wish we could have found a second hand one - it was pretty expensive when compared to the soft hulled versions you see advertised by swindelry's accross the land. Still, as the dealer said, I am not comparing like with like....!

I think you will find a 6hp will allow you to plane but an 8hp will really get you moving. You will be quite OK using an 8hp as the strain on the transom will still be within tolerances.

Nice to see you posting again.
I think that putting a larger outboard than recommended, on the transom, is certain to make your insurance null and void.
I had a relatively heavy 3m Typhoon inflatable with wooden floor and had a 6hp on the back and this really flew, albeit in a totally uncontrollable way.

Yes, RIB will almost certainly have deeper V hull so more power required. It will also not skid about so much as well. Half of my post was therefore a waste of IPC's web space, no change there then ! Insurance doubts still valid though - unlike the actual cover./forums/images/icons/smile.gif. I still wouldn't fancy a 2.7m RIB powered by anything bigger than 8hp especially if steering is by tiller. AND ANYWAY how come you are now a Mexican Moose with a Scottish accent ?

Yeah it will definitely get on the plane with that. But it won't be ace whamming fun. The mercury 15hp is the same-looking moulding as the rest of the family that runs from about 6hp ish and about the lightest 15hp you can buy - same as many 8hp motors, certainly if they are 4-strokes. I ran a non-rigid inflatable hull zodiac 2.4 m x 1.5 m dinghy (rated at 8hp) with inflatable hull with the merc15 engine, very wizzy and much better than the recommended grindy 8hp. I was able to borrwo one from a friendly neighbour on the pontoon and trying before buying - can you possibly prevail in the same way?

I bet it will be ok. No idea bout insurance, but then, I've never claimed on marine insurance, only paid it. A longhandler will allow you to stand (posy git!) or at least sit forward further. Yeehah!

Sounds as though I should go a bit bigger than the reccomended size but not too big. There is the question of weight as I am not sure that the mounting for my davits will take much more than the RIB istself so I will have to fit and remove it every time I launch it...what a pain!

I know a guy with a 3.3hp but I suspect trying his engine will only confirm that it is too small. Perhaps I should trawl the marina and make some new friends (as long as they have a big outboard)!!

You will find that putting and taking off outboard is much more of a pain than being two minutes late for the pub. In all the hundreds of Threads we have had on here. Lightness and ease are the best for dinghys. With large heavy engines being a deffinate no go.

Ive got a valiant 2.6 rib with Mercruy 5 hp 4 stroke it will plane with one person but lightening quick it aint, The mercury is heavy and probably the most you would want to lift on and off such a small rib, but then if I wanted to blat about I would have bought something bigger and able to cope with the extra HP. Having said that after one years ownership Im still pleased with my choice.

re reading your post you asked about the consol again ive looked into this, the valiant ribs that can take the consule have a raised moulding in the floor, mine 2.6 certainly does not have this. When I asked if one could be fitted the answer was not as standard but if you are a bit handy with some common sense it could be done. However you say you take two adults and two kids you'll not get every one in if you have fitted a consul. I was a bit cautious because until you have trial fitted the consul you re not sure if it looks the biz or not.,

I've had a couple of Valiant RIB's and had good experience with them as tenders but the reason that they are relatively cheap and light is that hull is a single skin moulding rather than a double skin one and the tubes are made of a cheaper plastic type material rather than hypalon. IMHO Valiants are built to a price and I would not exceed Valiant's reccomended max engine size. 6hp would be enough to plane with 2 on board but probably not more
I would'nt bother with a centre console. It weighs a lot and takes up all the floor space so you might find it difficult to get 3-4 adults on board. I had a console on a Valiant 300 RIB and ended up removing it for these reasons

i was out today for the first time in my new valient 250 + merc 5hp 2 stroke. Great fun planes with one no probs with 1 adult + 1 child still planed although a took a tad longer top speed with 2 up was about 12-14 knots according to speed boat alongside me, which is plenty in a 2.5 m boat i think
