I have had enough of my Merc 4hp. It's got plenty of grunt but it is too temperomental. I want to trade in for a good one with a better built gear shift and an electric start.

Who should I go and speak too?

Ben, at Hayling Outboards or something like that. Next door to Pepe Boatyard. Nice chap, bought a 9.9 Merc off him earlier this year.

A second vote for Ron Hale.

About four few years back, only place I could get a decent deal on a new 6hp Merc and they fitted special prop and charging electrics in short order. Seemed to have a good stock and workshop and outboards are a large part of the business.

Be warned, electric start motors are heavy and you are probably going to have to go to a twin cylinder 6hp or 8hp to get electric start which means even more weight. Are you planning to put it on a sprung bracket?

Your motor has no business being temperamental. Is it a 4 stroke with a blanking plug in the slow running adjustment screw?

By the way, if it would help I can show you how to bring the gear shift to the front of the engine.
