I know this issue has been discussed many a time but here are my specifics on which I need forums in depth wealth of knowledge.

We have just changed to a Avon 3.1m rib as we can just fit it in the V45 garage by taking the engine off. My Yamaha 8hp with additional fins on won’t quite get me & SHMBO up on the plane so I am looking for that little extra bit of power. I know that 15hp 2 strokes work well as friends have the same set up.
My main worry is weight as I need to take engine on & off each time out of garage so need to keep sensible, what I really want is a 2 stroke 10hp but with 15hp performance, I have heard rumours that some 10hp can be converted to 15, if so can anybody make recommendations of good power to weight 2 stroke outboards. I know I need to act fast due to the demise of 2 strokes.

Hi

any 10's that can be made into 15's will weigh the same as a 15 anyhow- cuz they'll be the same motor with some means of restriction.

Think a recent 10hp test found the tohatsu 2T lightest & performed well. I'd think a light ( ie, not the same block as a 15 ) 10hp 2T will do what you need.

Indeed, Tohatsu make a 9.8 @ 25Kg + a 9.9 @ 41Kg - same weight as the 15

Timbad, for your info the boys from Williams have been to Princess and measured up for a new compact jet rib that will fit in a V45 should be available in October (sure it won't be cheap though).

I used a 15hp mercury in place of 8hp yam on 2.85 zodiac. Bit heavier, much whizzier. Cut the decal a bit so it reads "5" instead of "15" and everyone was fine about it. Apart from a few tutting dull types hereabouts who fretted about insurance.

I had a 15hp Mariner 2 stroke. Bought it cos it was the lightest 15 on the market. Great performance but far too heavy for fitting to a Rib from the bathing platform, it was difficult enough on the beach !!

FWIW I would go for the Tohatsu 9.8-unless you are built like Arnie Schwarzenegger. I had 9.9Yam on a zodiac 310 and it planed easily with 2 up.
