Hi All, I am looking to buy a RIB dinghy about 2.6/3m and an outboard. Some of the makers reccommend a maximum size of outboard in HP. What determines the maximum size of outboard., is it weight or power. And what is the difference between a 10HP and a 15HP outboard? (besides the obvious) I am assuming weight and fuel consumption.
thanks

Hi,
You say RIB so do we assume rigid floor is a definate?
If so one dinghy I'd suggest you check out is the Bombard plastic floor / folding transom model. Much lighter than a fibreglass floor and more comfortable than the HP versions.
We replaced a HP floor 3 metre Zodiac with the same size plastic floor Bombard and perhaps not surprisingly, found the build materials were the same. Ours planed two up with a 8hp Yamaha 2 stroke.
Cheers

Are you buying new or preloved? Are you looking at a 4 stroke or an old 2 stroke? FWIW you will find that 2 stroke 10 and 15 HP's will be the same weight (same block) but with 4 strokes 8 and 10HP's will be the equivalents.

Been through the process.

The mistakes I made were to buy and aerodeck tender - really a disaster unless you are genuinely going to deflate and store on a regular basis - to buy an under powered engine, 15 HP seems about right if you sensibly want to have good planning ability with two up, and ending up with something to heavy. Personally because it is for davits and pulling up and down beaches etc a light Ribeye and a 15HP two stroke makes the best combination at an all up weight of less than 100 KG with plenty of performance.

I want to buy a second hand rib with a grp/plastic/aluminium floor. My concern is the weight of the engine. It will need to be hung off the pushpit when not being used. I plan to make a lifting frame to remove the engine. My current dinghy is a 2.6m with an inflatable floor and when I drive it I am all over the place. I thought a solid floor to bite the water and a bigger engine to plane and then I can anchor further from the shore. All comments appreciated.

I'm in Liverpool and I have a walker bay rib and it's really heavy for what it is and will only just about plane with a 10hp 4 stroke on it.
Your more than welcome to come and have a look at that if you want.

I have a 2.9 Waveline with plywood floor and inflatable keel. Planes very well 2 up + 50 liters of water cans (50kg) with Tohatsu 9.8 2 stroke.

I would be wary of exceeding the placarded engine size as it could land you in trouble if there's an accident.
