Gents, another plea.....

Gearbox is shot on my mariner 48.

Anyone know what to look for as a replacement?

I've been told about yamaha and maybe mercury being the same.

Any one know definitively what to search for?

Even consider buying a whole outboard to strip.

Thanks in advance.

steve.

not sure, but i'm guessing it's old.

twin cylinder pull start.

very basic but well looked after and runs like a dream...

untill i hit a rock and killed the gearbox!

i've no idea if there's a plate of number on it, any idea of where to look?

Just had another look...

no plate on the engine, but there's what's left of it in a sort of oxidezed "i used to live here" sort of way.

I don't know enough about these things to even hazard a guess on age or even different changes over the years.

stuck again.

That would certainly fit with what i thinking.

Someone told me that the mercury engines were also made by yamaha.

that said, i'm hoping that i could source a gearbox from one of these "other" models, but not sure which (if any) are the same... some share the same water pump impeller, which seems to be a few of these only.

i'm told the 48/50/55 and 60 are simmilar, but the 70 is not.

i was wondering if a blue band merc/brown band???? would also be the same. some of the pics look similar, but before i start bothering people with taking photos of the fixings, i wanted a rough idea of what to search for.... Ebay/google/B & O's etc.

so still a bit stuck at the moment.

I think your engine may be "almost totally" a Yamaha, but not too sure re the gearbox ??

if you can post a photo of your gearbox, I will take a pic of my 1976/7 Merc 500 50hp blueband gearbox tomorrow & post the pic,

found a pic from 24/08/09, if I remember correctly the Merc gear ratio is 2:1, will check thro me manuals,

if you need any info from the MERCURY service manual re the gearbox, just let me know

looks identical except for the front fixings. mine are all from below, with the last holding the anode... i can see why some people say it's the same engine.

Thanks for going to all the trouble to help.

i'm possibly looking a buying another engine to use untill the parts eventually turn up on an auction site or B&O.

Thanks again.

steve

Think its a Yamaha based o/b, 2 cyl built 1975?? > 1980 ??

on checking another engine Serial No. list, it has the Mariner 48 engines built from 1980 > 1983

1980 48M: 670-003336
1980 48ML: 670-314836

48 work M: 1980= 670-004066; 1981= 670-005006; 1982= 670-006936; 1983= 670-007576
48 work ML:1980= 670-322656; 1981=670-322656; 1982= 670-332226; 1983= 670-337411

hope this is correct.

It may well be..

But no idea fo what that means to me unless you can cross reference a yamaha 60 hp gearbox??

I'm at a loss now, and am considering buying a newer engine, which is a shame as this one runs a treat and SWMBO is putting the blame firmly at my feet for buggering it up in the first place!
