The last Reviews of the 4-10hp range of Outboards I can find on the Web is an article written in 2005. Obviously the 2 Stroke" redundancy" has had an effect on the marketplace since then so I find it strange their are not more resourses available to make comparisons. The brochures are not quoting such things as fuel efficiency and frankly they all say "we make the best otboard in the world so buy mine" so an impartial comparison by one of the mags is the only way you can make an educated decision.

I know either PBO or Sailing today did an outboard test of around 10 different 4st and 2st outboards up to 10hp that could be used to push a Yacht (they tested them on a folk boat and on the bench) in the last 2 years some time, sorry I cant remeber what date. All I can remember was that if you want a 2 stroke 9 the Tohatsu 9.8 came out pretty well. There was a seperate article at a different date on smaller tender engines up to 4hp, winner being the tohatsu 3.5 2 stroke if I remember correctly.

Having tried a few 5hp four strokes, I really like the Suzuki - high charging output, inboard and outboard fuel tank, doesn't miss a beat and sips petrol as if it hates the stuff.

I think the Johnson is the same engine.

Mind you I have just bought one of the last of the 2-stroke Mercury Saildrives as I decided they were lighter, less hassle and not really that much thirstier.

Still one or two left if you look around for them.

Interesting........ I had one for 5 years and it never missed a beat except when the shear pins snapped (on a regular basis). Bit noisy but dead reliable, you obviously had a bad one??

Him and me both.
Lots of corrosion probs on the Honda as well. Strange as the cars seem well glued together.

I had a Yamaha 4hp 4st. Terrific engine. Mainly because it was unremarkable. Always started, kept running, pushed the boat, didn't use much fuel, no vibration, quiet. What more can you ask?

Avoid Honda like the plague, especially the 5HP 4st

I have had one for over 4 years now, a great little engine, always starts first time, runs very well, no visible corrosion. It is perhaps a bit noisy but so was my Seagull!!

My previous experience with 2-stroke engines makes me very glad I bought a 4-stroke
