Is there anywhere recommended in the UK that I can send an inherited GPS 72 for repair? It doesn't power up. I don't see any help with troubleshooting in the manual. Depending on prices it might be worth getting it fixed.

I imagine Garmin will laugh at your ancient gadget :)

http://theservicecentre.eu/ would be my first port of call for repairing obsolescent marine electronics, but I suspect you can buy a replacement on eBay for less than their initial charge just to look at it (and that's not because their charges are too high).

I suppose I meant a solo nerd-type person rather than an expensive company fixing expensive equipment.

Garmin are unable to repair it!

If Garmin are unable to repair it I strongly suspect that nobody else will.

I suspect "unwilling" more than "unable", although the latter might also be true depending on what facilities they maintain in-house. Neither has much bearing on whether a specialist like the one I linked to above would be able to. They've repaired my old Raymarine kit twice, when Raymarine had no interest (never occurred to me to ask Raymarine; my dad did for the second fault and was politely laughed at).

It's fifteen years old (ancient in portable electronics terms) and worth about £30 if it were working. As a non-runner it's more or less worthless.

If you search eBay for "Fixed Price Repair" you will find The Service Centre's offering.
I sent my Raymarine A65 to them but it proved to be unrepairable. They refunded my money.
I looked for an inexpensive replacement on eBay and found that there were various Garmins on offer at very reasonable prices but none of them had charts for my area (Irish Sea?Irish South Coast). When I investigated the cost of buying charts to suit, I found that I would be shelling out in excess of £300 for the two items. I did manage to get a similar plotter to the one that had packed up, for £250 on eBay, and was able to use the charts I already had. The Service Centre's eBay listings do not include repairs to Garmin products, but a phone call or email would soon get you accurate info.

Four years ago Garmin in Southampton repaired my similar vintage Map76 for a flat rate of 50 quid all in.

I guess the sands of time have run out for our old kit

I have twice had 72's repaired by Garmin at minimal cost. For reasons too hard to explain, I had three of them.

However, when one failed again at the end of last season they said they were no longer supported.

NB if its is a 72H (version with the USB output) they still make them and so will presumably repair them.

I assume it will power up neither on battery nor on external power. If it'll power up on external power but not on battery I'll take it off your hands for a few (!) quid as a spare.

Ancient? You can still buy the H version (USB instead of serial) new, though the replacement has just come out. Oddly enough, my GPS72 won't start either this year, so I am going to ask Garmin about it.

Shut yer face... my 72 is still going strong! :D

I would say only just obsolescent, they've bought out the 72H since I bought mine 7 or 8 years ago.. I think the OP is right though, I can't see why Garmin would want to fix it they're only just over £100 new... few second hand ones going on eBay at the moment?
