Hi
My outboard engine has decided it was time it broke down on me and is stuck in forward gear. It is a Tohatsu 6hp Sailpro. Fiddling with the lever and a fair amount of swearing at it as not had any effect. Im wondering if anyone knows if there is an easy fix or if it definitely needs to go to the shop? Ive looked on Dr Google and Dr You tube with no joy . Thanks

Is there a join in the linkage between the gear shift lever and gearbox that has come lose ?

Yup worth popping the rubber grommet off that's usually found a third of the way from the bottom of the leg and seeing if you can spot the shift linkage. It should move up and down with relatively little force, so possible to test it again that way once the linkage is separated.

Next step would be separating the entire leg and seeing what's going on from there.

As said above it could be the lever seized due to corrosion. Common problem with out boards with no grease nipple in that location
Or the clamp between the upper and lower shift rods come adrift

It he lever does not move then that is seized . Be careful not too much brute force or you will break it off. The O ring seals (#32) may prevent any release oil getting to where its needed . You may have to separate the power head from the exhaust housing

If the lever moves freely then most likely the clamp (#27) has come loose

You don't say what year but this diagram is typical

Agree with Vic Johnsons were notorious for having the shaft behind the shift lever seize inside the body. Other makers may be similar. A really major job to dismantle to the point of getting access to the shaft inside. This problem is obvious with no movement or stiff movement of the shift lever. If you can work it a bit then increase movement you may be able to save the situation. I put an extension on my gear lever partly to make it easier to reach and partly to give more leverage against friction of corrosion. ol'will
