Ouse bin tipping on t\'river

The Humber Web post was drifting a bit (like the tree trunks below!).

I thought it worthy of a dedicted post.

What can be done about all the rubbish on the Ouse (and I don't mean my Birchwood, Byron, tcm et all /forums/images/icons/wink.gif ).

It's getting a bit bad when (like Ian S) you have to change your props for the trip.

A mere twig! You want to see some of the crap that came down the Guardiana one year! Now they were logs! Bloody dangerous that lot, don't the river authorities check, now and again? Isn't that what yopur licence is about?

Buy a wood burner and a chain saw and haul it aboard, you'll heat yourself free and benefit the river users.

Last year, when we had some very high tides on the Thames, I was working on my boat on its swinging mooring when a garden shed came rolling past, windows, double door the lot. At times all that was visible was the apex.

Explain that one to your insurance company after hitting it.

Wonder if Jack Hargreaves got out ok?

Funny, I often liken the male passtime of 'messing about with ones boat', to that old 'potting shed and a bottle of sherry' syndrome of escaping ones SWMBO and kids for a while.

Seem's like someones tried to combine the two!

Hi Martyn. That's a disgrace - but the river Dee at Chester gets like that when a high spring backs up the river higher than the weir. It creates a hideous mess with logs branches and trunks along with other detritus.

Would you mind telling me how to get pictures to appear in the posting?

Re: Ouse bin tipping on t\'river

Hi Dave,

Actually the pictures don't paint a fair picture of how bad the problem is, since the rubbish is spread over a few miles of river, and very concentrated in a number of areas, making safe navigation for GRP boats extreemly difficult.

To get images simply type '[image]' then the address of the image location, then '[/image]' (without the inverted comas).

You have to find a location to upload the piccies first, and I like many have been using the www.arweb.co.uk site which contains pages especially for the purpose of posting them on this forum.

However I have just decided to try my hand at a little web development myself, and only today set up 'www.mboat.org'.

I will use this site now to store my piccies for the forum, and who knows, if I can keep enough interest, it might become a useful little site.

Thanks Martyn. Nice site, by the way. I maintain our yacht club site and I can use one of the back pages for my piccies.

Re: Ouse bin tipping on t\'river

what excellent holiday pics. Looks like you had a wonderful time! (considering that the alternative for yorkshiry types is sitting in the car on the front at scarborough eating fish paste sarnies in the rain)

Re: Ouse bin tipping on t\'river

I dont know why you're complaining about a bit of flotsam and jetsam /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
When I was on 'big ships' I sometimes went to Calcutta and I can assure you the Hooghly River was really 'orrible. Apart from cows wandering in and out at will it was not that unusual to see the odd dead body floating by. Fair turned my stomach, I can tell you.
We do have this problem on the upper Thames, particularly after a period of flooding, although really big stuff usually gets caught up at the locks and weirs.
Its a more serious problem below Richmond to the Estuary, especially as you often cant see the stuff.
We also get problems with dumped shopping trolleys and I believe there was even a van in the river just below Penton Hook earlier this summer. The canal boys will doubtless have even more vandalism stories to add to the pot /forums/images/icons/frown.gif
