Our new boat

Over Easter we went up to the German Baltic coast to see the launch of our new boat - Alshira, a Sirius 310.

I promised photos...

The launch with Urs from the boat yard in the bows sorting out mooring lines - he later rigged her and explained in detail exactly what he was doing and why - brilliant!

Gordon at the naming ceremony giving a libation to Neptune (and Rasmus, a German wind-god according to the German and Danish Sirius owners who we invited to help us name her, although Wikipedia hasn't heard of Rasmus!) They helped us finish a bottle of good red wine to name her, anyway.

New Boat Day!! Hurray!!!!

We'll be sailing her back at the end of July, and look forward to initiating her into the vaguaries of the East Coast and introducing her to the reboubtable ECF members when we're back, but i'm afraid we'll miss the pirates weekend. She'll be at Bridgemarsh, so you are welcome to a guided tour.

She looks rather solid, and is a lot heavier than Vela Rose, but we've been very pleasantly surprised with her sailing performance. She accelerates up to 5 or 6 kts easily, and powers through big waves well - we had 20-25kts on the quarter and 2m steep waves which would have stopped Vela dead, but Alshira averaged 6.9 kts for over two hours on an exhilarating sail.

We've been grinning like Cheshire cats ever since she was launched!

By the way - try sailing in the Baltic - it's about as good a sailing area as you could imagine.

Probably the first week in August. We are going to take the sail back through the Kiel canal, the German and Dutch Frisian islands reasonably slowly.
